In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), the 12 houses are called Bhavas (भाव), each representing a specific area of life. Unlike Western astrology, Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (based on fixed stars) and typically employs the whole-sign house system, where each sign corresponds to one house, starting from the Ascendant (Lagna).

The divisional charts (Vargas) are fractional harmonics of the birth chart (Rasi/D1) that reveal specialized life domains. There are 16 primary Vargas (though some texts cite up to 20+), each with unique functions.

For example - D9 Division: The zodiac (360°) is divided into 9 equal parts per sign, creating 108 Navamsas (12 signs × 9 = 108 divisions).

Each Navamsa spans 3°20' (since 30° ÷ 9 = 3°20').
