Willpower

Willpower is the mental ability to control your impulses, emotions, or habits so you can make choices that align with your long-term goals instead of giving in to short-term urges.

It’s the inner strength that helps you stick to a decision, resist temptation, and follow through with intention—even when it’s uncomfortable or difficult.

In Chinese Medicine theory, the willpower Zhi (志) refers to:

  • Willpower

  • Determination

  • Drive to pursue goals

  • The capacity to endure hardships and stay focused

The willpower is closely linked to immunity and the vitality (strength) of a person. The willpower, Zhi, is the soul of the Essence, the soul of immunity strength, and the soul of Energy. Willpower is pertained to Kidney, the vital genital organ, the Sacral Chakra, the Water, the sexuality, and the Essence.; willpower is the soul of the kidney, the reproductive system, and the power house of human being.

You'll notice that people who are physically healthy and strong can achieve many great things, and they're not easily tired. Their strength is there. Their focus is there. Their attention is not diverted. Their vitality is there. They look bright and intelligent. They glow. They look nourished. They are energetic. Most would say they have very good willpower.

"If you want to heal the body, you must heal the mind." - Plato.

Vice versa, when one is ill, one can heal the soul of the body first. By altering our believes and attitude of life, we can take control of our bodies and our destiny. In my acupuncture and hypnosis work, I help people build the willpower needed to overcome illnesses.

In Chinese medicine, willpower (志, zhì) is the spiritual aspect of the Kidneys (腎).

It represents determination, perseverance, and the inner drive to pursue life goals despite obstacles. The Kidneys store Jing (essence), the body’s deepest energy that supports growth, reproduction, and longevity. When Kidney Jing is abundant, willpower is strong — the mind feels grounded, courageous, and able to stay focused.

When Kidney energy is weak, willpower declines. This may show as fear, indecision, lack of motivation, or giving up easily. Physically, this can accompany fatigue, lower back weakness, or reproductive and hormonal imbalance. Excessive stress, overwork, or chronic fear deplete Kidney essence, further weakening willpower.

To strengthen willpower, Chinese medicine nourishes the Kidneys through rest, proper breathing, warming the lower back, eating mineral-rich and black-colored foods (like sesame or seaweed), and practicing meditation or Qi Gong. By restoring Kidney essence and balancing Yin–Yang, one can rebuild inner strength, clarity, and resolve — the true foundation of willpower.
